REAL MADRID star Mesut Özil sees no reason as to why his side can’t overcome Manchester United at Old Trafford tomorrow evening.
The Madristas are in fine fettle after two accomplished performances saw them sweep aside Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and La Liga in a week.
With spirits high in the camp, Özil remains confident that Real can progress to the quater-finals of Europe’s elite competition if they can play their natural game.
However, Özil is not underestimating United, who have a rich history in the competition.
“It will be a tough game against a very good team, but we showed in the first leg of what we are capable, ” Özil told Spanish paper Marca.
“We were clearly better in the first half, with plenty of chances.
“We have great respect for Manchester, but our goal is to play as we can and we can beat anyone. Whoever can win in Barcelona can win in Manchester.”
Özil was also quick to dispel rumours that he has fallen out with his coach, Jose Mourinho.
He added: “I’m fit, happy to play every week, I have fun on the court. That’s because coach trusts me and he would thank my good performance.
“The media writes a lot about their relationship with the costumes, but I can only say that my relationship with Mourinho is really good.
“He supports me and, for me, is one of the best coaches in the world, if not the best.”
Mesut Özil is confident that Real Madrid have what it takes to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
Ahead of their trip to Old Trafford to meet Manchester United on Tuesday, Oezil said his side were high on confidence following their recent wins over Barcelona.
Real and United go into the clash at 1-1 after the first-leg draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“It’s going to be a difficult match against a really good squad, but we already showed what we’re capable of in the first leg. We were clearly better in the first half, with loads of chances,” Oezil told Die Welt.
“We have great respect for United but we aim to play our game; that way we can beat anybody. If you can win in Barcelona, you can win in Manchester.”
The Germany international then went on to voice his delight with Madrid’s success against arch-rivals Barcelona this term.
“I love playing against the best every day,” he added. “Everyone’s watching. Playing against Barcelona is an enormous motivation. The Clasico has huge repercussions and eliminating them from the Copa was fantastic.
“We’ve proved that we can play against them strength to strength. We won the Super Cup against them and we’ve eliminated them from the Copa. We’re proud.”
Real Madrid star Mesut Özil says there are no problems between him and head coach Jose Mourinho.
The Germany international, who has scored five times in all competitions for Real so far this campaign, expressed optimism for what his side can achieve this year in the wake of back-to-back wins over Barcelona.
“We are a team, and if you look at how successful we play, you cannot doubt that everything is alright within our squad,” the 24-year-old told Welt am Sonntag.
“If we weren’t a unit, we wouldn’t be able to beat Barcelona. We treat each other respectfully; we’re like a small family.
“I get along very well with Jose Mourinho. He supports me wherever he can and for me, he’s one of the best coaches, if not the best coach in the world.”
Real sealed victory in their Copa del Rey semi-final on Tuesday with a 3-1 win at Camp Nou before beating Barca once more on Saturday, this time 2-1 in La Liga, and Oezil suggested that the team are in a good position to build on that success.
“If you play for Real Madrid, winning titles is an obligation,” the former Werder Bremen star continued.
“That’s why we’re looking forward to the Copa del Rey final and are determined to proceed to the next round in the Champions League as well.
“Our goal is to win both the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.
“Real Madrid against Bayern Munich would be a cool (Champions League) final, but there’s still a long way to go.”
