Özil to receive German POTY award!

Real Madrid forward Mesut Ozil will be recognised as Germany’s player of the year for 2011 prior to kick-off at Wednesday night’s friendly with France in Bremen.

Ozil, who came through the Under-19 and Under-21 ranks, has won senior 30 caps and topped a vote by members of the German Football Association’s official fan club and will receive his award at the Weser Stadion.

“Of course I am delighted by this,” the 23-year-old said.

Former Schalke youngster Ozil made his name at the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, his performances earning him a move from Werder Bremen to the Bernabeu.

Since moving to Spain, he says he has “matured and improved” as a player and paid credit to his manager and club.

“I am glad that I can play for the biggest club in the world,” he said. “Things have been made easy for me. [Mourinho] talks to me a lot and the support he gives me is important. It gives me lots of confidence to be one of the most important players in the team.”

Although Ozil is delighted to pick up his individual award, the main prize that interests him is lifting the Euro 2012 trophy in Kiev on 1 July.

“We have the potential to beat anyone and we have what it takes to win the title,” he said. “We are looking forward to the game. They are one of the best teams in the world and among the favourites for the title. It’s a big challenge for us.”

Germany assistant coach Hans-Dieter Flick said of the Player of the Year: “We are proud to have him in our team. When he has the ball, you can feel the excitement and astonishment among the fans.”

Ozil: Germany can beat anyone

Mesut Ozil reckons Germany must justify their status as one of the favourites to win UEFA EURO 2012 by beating France in tomorrow’s friendly. The 23-year-old was his nation’s player of the year for 2011, but has always said the main prize that interests him is lifting the continental trophy in Kiev on 1 July.

Germany, who tackle Laurent Blanc’s team in Bremen, join Spain and the Netherlands among the pre-tournament favourites, but Ozil insists they must turn their potential into victories.

“We have the potential to beat anyone and we have what it takes to win the title,” he said. “We are looking forward to the game. They are one of the best teams in the world and among the favourites for the title. It’s a big challenge for us.”

France were drawn in Group D alongside Sweden, England and co-hosts Ukraine, while Germany have been drawn in Group B, where they will face the Netherlands and Denmark after starting their campaign against Portugal.

Ozil faces Portugal stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Fabio Coentrao and Pepe every day in training for Real Madrid, and says that they all intend to return from the EURO with a winner’s medal.

“They know how strong the German national team is,” said Ozil. “The boys say they want to win, but I have already told them that Germany want to finish as undefeated group winners and European champions.”

Maturing under Mourinho
Ozil left Werder Bremen in August 2010 and after 18 months at Real Madrid, he is maturing into one of Europe’s best attacking midfielders under Jose Mourinho.

“I am glad that I can play for the biggest club in the world,” he said. “I have matured a lot in Madrid.

“Things have been made easy for me. [Mourinho] talks to me a lot and the suppport he gives me is important. It gives me lots of confidence to be one of the most important players in the team.”

Klose to captain Germany against France.

Miroslav Klose will captain Germany in the international friendly against France, assistant coach Hansi Flick said on Tuesday.

Germany captain Philipp Lahm had to withdraw from the squad late Sunday with a knee injury, deputy Bastian Schweinsteiger is also sidelined and there was some doubt whether Klose would be fit to play.

But Flick told a news conference that the Lazio striker, who on 63 is just five goals shy of Gerd Mueller’s national record 68, would be able to train with the team later on Tuesday and play the next day.

“We will only be training once before the match and there is nothing that should prevent Klose from playing against France. We decided to cancel the training scheduled for Monday as so many of the players were involved in league matches on Sunday,” said Flick.

Flick also said that Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese will start the match in front of his home fans. Wiese, who will take the place of regular first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, has played five matches for Germany, but never been on a winning side.

“We are sure the fans will support him and hopefully this will allow him to win his first international,” Flick said.

Although Wednesday marks 100 days until Euro 2012, Flick said it was not the start of a countdown to the tournament in Poland and Ukraine.

“Our countdown started when we began the qualifying campaign and our organization has been excellent. We have a team of 40 people who have been watching all potential opponents,” he said.

“We will be totally prepared for all the teams that we face and are geared up towards a successful tournament.”

Germany have been drawn into a difficult group with the Netherlands, Portugal and Denmark at the June 8-July 1 tournament.

But Joachim Loew’s team breezed through qualifying without dropping a point, and gained further confidence by winning 2011 friendlies against Brazil, Uruguay and the Dutch.

Victory against France will further boost morale, but playmaker Mesut Özil echoed Loew when he rated France highly on Tuesday.

“France is a strong side with some excellent individual players. I think they are one of the favourites for the title,” he said.

Oezil added he was happy to be back in Bremen after playing at Werder 2008-2010 before leaving for Real Madrid.

“It was a terrific feeling to come back to Bremen after such a long time,” Oezil said.

Flick said a return of former international Kevin Kuranyi is no issue for the management. The Dynamo Moscow striker was quoted in a German magazine as saying that he is still hoping to feature in Germany’s Euro plans.

The team will officially say goodbye to the president of the German football federation (DFB) Theo Zwanziger later Tuesday. Zwanziger will step down on Friday and Flick said they were sad to see him go.

“We have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with him, but I am sure that it will also be excellent with the new president.”
